Nineteenth century steam hammer

Late 19th century Steam Hammer., used for forging iron and steel shafts. It was supplied by steam from the boilers. A steam hammer gives extremely fine tolerances and large steam hammer up to 30 ft in height were still forging tank barrels in the 1980’s in Nottingham. A much larger example of a steam hammer can be found in the Boiler House (No. 13 in the tour guide).
